What is ASTM test method for MFI?

2023-08-18 11:40

The ASTM test method for MFI (Melt Flow Index) is ASTM D1238. This standard is titled "Standard Test Method for Melt Flow Rates of Thermoplastics by Extrusion Plastometer." It provides a standardized procedure for measuring the melt flow rates or flow properties of thermoplastic materials.

The MFI test is conducted using an extrusion plastometer, which consists of a barrel, a piston, a heated cylinder, and a die with a specific length and diameter. The test procedure involves the following steps:

1. Sample preparation: The thermoplastic material is first prepared by drying it to remove any moisture content, followed by grinding or cutting it into appropriate granules or pellets for testing.

2. Conditioning: The prepared samples are conditioned by placing them in a controlled environment to ensure consistent moisture content and temperature.

3. Loading the sample: A specific quantity of the conditioned material is weighed and loaded into the barrel of the extrusion plastometer.

4. Preheating: The barrel is preheated to a specified temperature, which is dependent on the type of material being tested.

5. Extrusion: After preheating, the piston is loaded onto the sample and placed into the heated cylinder. Under a predetermined load, the sample is melted and extruded through the die.

6. Collection and measurement: The extruded material passes through the die and is collected in a container. The weight of the extrudate collected over a specified time interval is measured.

7. Calculation: The Melt Flow Rate (MFR) or Melt Flow Index (MFI) is then calculated as the mass flow rate in grams per 10 minutes, using the measured weight of the extrudate.

ASTM D1238 provides specific guidelines for the extrusion plastometer specifications, sample dimensions, test conditions, and calculation methods to ensure consistent and comparable results across different laboratories and testing facilities.

It's important to note that ASTM D1238 is applicable to a broad range of thermoplastic materials, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), and others. However, different types of materials may require variations in the test conditions, including temperature, load, and die diameter, which would be specified accordingly.

By following the ASTM D1238 test method, manufacturers, researchers, and quality control laboratories can determine the melt flow properties of thermoplastic materials, which is essential for assessing processability, quality control, and performance optimization in various applications.
