How do you test for material fatigue?

2023-08-04 11:29

Material fatigue refers to the failure phenomenon of materials under cyclic loading. In order to evaluate the fatigue performance of materials, fatigue testing is usually required. The following are some common materials fatigue testing methods:

1. Rotational bending fatigue test

The rotating bending fatigue test is a common material fatigue test method, which is usually used for the fatigue test of metal materials. In this test, a specimen is clamped and rotated while a periodic bending load is applied at a specific location. By recording the deformation and stress of the sample under multiple cyclic loading, the fatigue limit and fatigue life of the material can be determined.

2. Tensile fatigue test

Tensile fatigue testing is a test method that applies a cyclic tensile load to a specimen, and is usually used for fatigue testing of non-metallic materials such as plastics and composite materials. In this type of test, a specimen is clamped and then a periodic tensile load is applied at a specific location. By recording the deformation and stress of the sample under multiple cyclic loading, the fatigue limit and fatigue life of the material can be determined.

3. Vibration fatigue test

Vibration fatigue testing is a test method for evaluating the fatigue performance of a material by applying a periodic vibration load to it. This test method is commonly used to evaluate the fatigue performance of mechanical systems such as automobiles and aircraft. In this test, the specimen is fixed on a vibrating table, and then a periodic vibration load is applied at a specific frequency and amplitude. By recording the deformation and stress of the sample under multiple cyclic loading, the fatigue limit and fatigue life of the material can be determined.

In short, the above are several common material fatigue test methods, and the selection of specific test methods should be comprehensively considered based on factors such as material type, sample shape, and application scenarios.
