ASTM E84 and ASTM E648 are both fire testing standards developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). They are used to determine the fire propagation characteristics of various construction materials.
ASTM E84 test method, also known as the "Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials", is typically used for testing the fire characteristics of interior finish materials, such as wall and ceiling materials, wood materials, and textiles. This test measures the flame spread and smoke development of a material when exposed to a heat source. The results of this test are used to determine the material's Class A, B, or C rating, with Class A being the best performing and Class C being the worst.
On the other hand, ASTM E648 test method, also known as the "Standard Test Method for Critical Radiant Flux of Floor-Covering Systems Using a Radiant Heat Energy Source", is used for testing the fire characteristics of flooring materials. This test measures the critical radiant flux, or the amount of heat energy required to cause a flooring material to self-extinguish when exposed to a heat source. The results of this test are used to determine whether a flooring material meets certain safety requirements.
In summary, ASTM E84 is used for testing the fire characteristics of interior finish materials, while ASTM E648 is used for testing the fire characteristics of flooring materials.
