How to test the durability of textiles?

2023-10-09 13:59

Testing textiles for durability is an important step in ensuring product quality and performance. Below are some common methods and guidelines for testing the durability properties of textiles:

1. Abrasion testing:

   - Abrasion testing is used to assess the abrasion resistance and durability of textiles. Common test methods include the Martindale abrasion test and the Wyzenbeek abrasion test.

   - Martindale abrasion testing evaluates the durability of textiles by simulating friction between different surfaces. The results are usually expressed in terms of the number of abrasion cycles.

   - The Wyzenbeek abrasion test evaluates the durability of textiles by simulating repeated linear friction. The test results are expressed in terms of the number of abrasion cycles or the abrasion rating.

2. Tensile and strength tests:

   - Tensile and strength tests are used to evaluate the tensile properties and tensile strength of textiles. Common test methods include the tensile test and the tear strength test.

   - The tensile test measures the deformation and breaking point of a textile during stretching by applying a force to evaluate its strength and ductility.

   - Tear strength tests are used to measure the resistance of textiles when subjected to tearing stress. The test results are usually expressed in terms of tear strength.

3. Washing resistance test:

   - Washing resistance test is used to evaluate the durability and color fastness of textiles during washing and laundering. Common test methods include washing durability test and color fastness test.

   - The washing durability test evaluates the durability and dimensional stability of textiles by simulating multiple washings.

   - Color fastness tests are used to evaluate the color fastness and fade resistance of textiles. Common test methods include washing fastness, rubbing fastness and light fastness tests.

4. Wrinkle resistance test:

   - Wrinkle resistance test is used to evaluate the wrinkle resistance of textiles during use and washing. Common test methods include wrinkle resistance test and compression resistance test.

   - The wrinkle test evaluates the wrinkle resistance of textiles by simulating the folding and compression of textiles. The results are usually expressed in terms of crease angle and crease recovery performance.

   - Compression resistance test is used to evaluate the recovery ability and wrinkle resistance of textiles when subjected to compression force.

5. Chemical Resistance Test:

   - Chemical resistance test is used to evaluate the durability and chemical stability of textiles when exposed to chemicals. Common test methods include acid and alkali durability test and solvent resistance test.

   - Acid and alkali durability tests assess the durability and chemical reactivity of textiles by exposing them to different acid and alkali solutions.

   - Solvent tolerance tests are used to assess the resistance and chemical stability of textiles when exposed to solvents.

6. Other tests:

   - Other test methods include antimicrobial property test, flame retardancy test, water repellency test, etc. The choice depends on the characteristics of the textile and its intended use.

The following factors need to be considered when selecting test methods and instruments:

1. standards and regulations: understand the relevant international standards and regulatory requirements, such as ASTM, ISO, AATCC, etc., to ensure that the test complies with industry standards.

2. Test equipment and instrumentation: Select equipment and instrumentation that is appropriate for the test requirements. Ensure the accuracy, repeatability and reliability of the test equipment to obtain credible test results.

3. Sample Preparation: Prepare the samples appropriately according to the standard requirements, such as washing, drying, pre-treatment and so on. Ensure that the condition of the sample meets the test requirements.

4. Test conditions: Set up appropriate test conditions, such as temperature, humidity, force, etc., to simulate the actual use of the environment.

5. Data recording and analysis: Record the data during the testing process and perform accurate data analysis and interpretation of the results. This helps to evaluate the durability performance of textiles and to improve and optimize the products.

6. Sample size and representativeness: Ensure that the number of samples used for testing is sufficient and representative to ensure the reliability and repeatability of the test results.

7. Testing cycle: Decide the testing cycle according to the expected service life of the textile and the usage environment. Long cycle testing can simulate the long-term use of textiles, but may also require longer testing time and cost.

8. Practical application: The test results are compared and evaluated against the requirements of the actual application. Consider the various stresses and environmental conditions that the textile may face in actual use to determine whether its durability performance meets the needs.

Finally, it is recommended to read the relevant test standards and methods carefully and consult professional test institutes or technical experts before conducting durability tests to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the tests, and to improve and optimize the products based on the test results.
