There are some differences between medical surgical masks and medical filtration masks in terms of design and use, mainly in the following aspects:
1. Filtration Efficacy: Medical surgical masks are primarily used to block oral and nasal secretions from healthcare workers to minimize the spread of bacteria in surgical scenarios. They usually have low filtration efficacy and are not capable of filtering small airborne particles. In contrast, medical filtration masks (e.g., N95 masks) utilize highly efficient filtration materials that are capable of filtering out airborne particulate matter, including pathogens and bacteria.
2. Sealing performance: Medical surgical masks are usually loosely designed for comfort and breathability. They are usually ear-hanging or strap-on designs that cover the mouth and nasal passages. Medical filtration masks, on the other hand, usually have a better seal to ensure that air passes through the filtration layer and not through the edges of the mask. They are usually designed with adjustable nose clips and a tight fit to ensure an effective seal.
3. Applicable scenarios: Medical surgical masks are mainly used in operating rooms and other medical environments to minimize contamination of patients and surgical scenarios by oral and nasal secretions from healthcare workers. Whereas medical filtration masks are mainly used to protect against respiratory-transmitted pathogens, e.g. when dealing with patients with infectious diseases or during viral outbreaks.
It is important to note that the nomenclature and standards for medical surgical masks and medical filtration masks may vary in different countries and regions. Therefore, in the specific application and selection of masks, judgment should be based on the relevant standards and guidelines, and appropriate instructions and requirements for use should be followed.
