What is the difference between UL 94 and ASTM E84 standards?

2023-11-22 11:53

UL 94 and ASTM E84 are both standards used to assess the fire performance of materials. However, they are based on different testing methodologies and provide different types of information. Here is a summary of the main differences between these two standards:

Ul 94:

UL 94 is a flammability standard developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). It is primarily used to evaluate the flammability of plastic materials. The UL 94 standard classifies materials into different ratings based on their performance in a series of fire tests. The tests are designed to assess how materials behave when exposed to a small open flame or ignition source.

The UL 94 standard defines several different ratings, including V-0, V-1, and V-2. V-0 is the highest rating, indicating that a material is highly flame retardant and self-extinguishing. V-1 and V-2 are lower ratings, indicating that the material has some degree of flame retardancy but may drip or have a longer burn time.

The tests conducted under UL 94 include the horizontal burn test, vertical burn test, and the glow wire test. These tests evaluate the material's ignition resistance, flame spread, and self-extinguishing properties.

ASTM E84:

ASTM E84, also known as the Steiner Tunnel Test or the Tunnel Test, is a standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). It measures the surface burning characteristics of building materials, including both combustible and noncombustible materials.

The ASTM E84 test is used to determine the material's flame spread index (FSI) and smoke developed index (SDI). FSI measures the rate at which flames spread across the surface of a material, while SDI measures the amount of smoke generated during a fire.

During the test, a sample of the material is mounted vertically inside a tunnel and exposed to a controlled flame at one end. The flame spread and smoke development are monitored and measured. The results are reported as numerical values, indicating the material's performance.

Comparison:

While both UL 94 and ASTM E84 assess the fire performance of materials, there are key differences between the two standards:

1. Scope: UL 94 focuses specifically on flammability of plastic materials, while ASTM E84 evaluates the surface burning characteristics of a wide range of building materials.

2. Ratings: UL 94 uses different classification ratings (V-0, V-1, V-2), indicating the material's self-extinguishing properties. ASTM E84 provides numerical values for flame spread index (FSI) and smoke developed index (SDI), allowing for comparison between different materials.

3. Test Methods: UL 94 uses tests such as the horizontal burn test, vertical burn test, and glow wire test, whereas ASTM E84 employs the Steiner Tunnel Test to simulate a real-life scenario.

4. Target Application: UL 94 is often used in industries that heavily rely on plastic materials, such as electronics and automotive. ASTM E84 is commonly used in building and construction applications to assess the fire performance of materials in terms of flame spread and smoke generation.

In summary, UL 94 is primarily used for assessing the flammability of plastic materials, while ASTM E84 evaluates the surface burning characteristics of various building materials. Each standard has its own set of test methods, ratings, and applications, tailored to specific industry needs.
