International: Kenya works to revive cotton industry

2023-03-30 10:42

The Kenyan government is committed to revitalizing the domestic cotton industry. On the one hand, specific measures include building additional cotton ginning plants and oil mills. For example, the latest embossing machines have a daily processing capacity of 3,780 tons.

In addition, the previously closed cotton ginning mills in some places may reopen with the implementation of the revitalization plan. On the other hand, relevant technical training will be provided to cotton farmers to increase production and income.

In the past ten years, the Kenyan cotton industry has been in a downturn. Many cheap or second-hand clothing from other countries have flooded the entire market, causing domestic cotton prices to slump and continue to fall. After the government lifted the ban on cottonseed imports, Kisumu and Homabay in the west imported 12 tons of cottonseed, 480kg of high-grade cottonseed and 140kg of high-grade insect-resistant cottonseed, which may be of great benefit to the recovery of the cotton industry.
